Peter's work centers on the role, value and governance of IT in enterprises. Peter joined the Sloan faculty in 2000 to become director of MIT Sloan's Center for Information Systems Research (CISR). MIT CISR is funded by more than seventy corporate sponsors and patrons, and undertakes practical research on how firms generate business value from IT. Peter is now Chairman of MIT CISR and focused on globalizing MIT CISR research and delivery.
In 2008 Ziff-Davis recognized Peter as #24 of "Top 100 Most Influential People in IT ". Peter has written award-winning books, journal articles, and case studies. His work has appeared in Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review and the Wall Street Journal.
Peter coauthored "best-selling " books published by HBS Press entitled: Enterprise Architecture as Strategy: Creating a Foundation for Business Execution (2006), IT Governance: How Top Performers Manage IT Decision Rights for Superior Results (2004), and Leveraging the New Infrastructure: How market leaders capitalize on information technology (1998). Peter's coauthored book Place to Space: Migrating to eBusiness Models, (2001) won one of the Library Journal of America's best business book of the year awards and was reviewed by the New York Times.
Peter is coauthoring a new book IT Savvy: what top executives must know to go from pain to gain to be published by Harvard business School Press (HBS Press) in 2009. Peter presents executive and MBA programs on the business value of IT and in 2007 Peter received an MIT Sloan "Outstanding Teacher" award.
