In 1988, George Bush was elected 41st president of the United States after serving two terms as vice president. During his 12 years of service in the White House, George Bush led the nation through a period of unprecedented change - the Cold War was won; the threat of nuclear war all but eliminated; the Soviet Union replaced by a democratic Russia; Germany unified; and age-old enemies discussed a lasting peace in the Middle East. His career in public service began in 1966 when he was elected to the first of two terms in Congress. Mr. Bush was named ambassador to the United Nations in 1974, and in 1976 director of the CIA. George Bush has co-authored a new book with former national security adviser Brent Scowcroft that will be published in early 1998. It is a behind-the-scenes look at the highest levels of American government as it confronted and shaped those events that led to the dawning of a new and more hopeful era in geopolitical affairs.
