If someone were to ask Chad, at the age of 27, how he felt about life, he would have answered the following:
"I was on top of my world, living all of my dreams. I had spent six years building businesses that were reaching new heights. I enjoyed landscape construction, real estate investing, and had recently finished an elk preserve embracing 5100 acres of God's finest country.
"I was active in athletics, playing league basketball and baseball. I had just started officiating basketball...something that I had dreamed of doing since watching my father referee when I was only nine years old. Being active in sports had been a major part of my life since I was a young boy."
"I had two beautiful boys, a three-year-old son, Christian, and a one-year-old son, Kyler. They had been and always will be the absolute joy of their mother's and my life. And I was also married to the most incredible woman in the world, in my eyes. Shondell was my high school sweetheart and lifelong princess.
When together as a family, everything in life always seemed to fall into place."
On April 3, 2001, Chad was involved in a serious accident while working out on the elk preserve. This accident left him paralyzed from the chest down with limited use of his arms. Breaking three of the seven vertebrae in his neck, Chad was pronounced a quadriplegic. While in rehabilitation, not only were therapists impressed with his desire for independence, but also his "love for life" attitude and determination to somehow find success in his new world.
